Beyond Basic Wheel-Throwing: Handles, Lids, Altering, and More
JULY 27-28, 2019
Join us for a two-day workshop with studio owner Jake Johnson. Jake has nearly twenty years of experience working in clay. He holds a bachelor's degree in sculpture from Bradley University and an MFA in ceramics from Penn State. His work has appeared in more than 50 exhibitions around the United States, and in publications including Clay Times and Lark Books' 500 series. Jake is known for his technical skill and lively forms. Learn more about Jake's work at jakesclayart.com
This workshop will benefit those who are seeking to:
- Learn tips for more efficient throwing and general good wheel-working habits
- Expand their abilities with handles, lids, spouts, and altering
In general, this will be an all-around "get better at lots of aspects of wheel-throwing" workshop.
Skill Level
All participants should, at a minimum, be able to confidently center and throw a cylinder. More skillful potters are encouraged to participate. (Please note that the ability to center is absolutely required.) Participants must be at least 18 years old.
What to Expect
This will be a hands-on workshop. Every participant will have a wheel of their own for the weekend. The days will rotate between brief demonstrations and working time. Work will not be fired as part of the workshop, but participants will be welcome to take greenware with them (or, if you're local, have it fired at the studio within a few weeks). The Studio will provide nearly all materials for the weekend, including clay and tools. The registration fee includes 50 lbs of clay, and additional clay will be available for purchase at $13 per 25 lbs. Participants are welcome to bring preferred clay or throwing tools with them. (Please note that the Studio does not provide aprons. Please bring your own if you use one.)
Light breakfast will be provided on Saturday. Lunch will be provided on both Saturday and Sunday. There are a variety of restaurants within a short drive of the studio where participants can find dinner before the optional, public Friday and Saturday evening events. If you're traveling from out of town, you'll find several hotels on the west end of Waynesboro, as well as a few bed and breakfasts.
Rough Schedule
Friday evening: We will begin the weekend with an optional event at the studio. Jake will demonstrate and we'll have snacks. Workshop participants are encouraged to come, and the studio's students, members, and visitors will be welcome as well.
Saturday, 10am-5pm: Demonstrations and working time. Lunch will be served at the studio.
Sunday, 10am-3pm: Demonstrations and working time. Lunch served at the studio.
